Not all screens are alike

Not all screens are alike

The average person spends about 7 hours a day looking at screens.* After a while, there’s a burning, itching sensation as eye strain sets in. The problem is blue light, or what scientists call the Blue Light Hazard (BLH). But not all screens are alike. A study conducted at the Harvard School of Public Health found that E Ink’s ePaper screens with ComfortGazeTM front light are up to three times healthier for eyes than LCD screens.

Reducing the blue light hazard.

What makes E Ink’s ePaper screens different? They’re non-emissive, meaning they rely on ambient light for viewing versus LCD screens that shine brightly. Looking at an E Ink ePaper screen – whether it’s built into a monitor, eBook, eNote or smartphone – is no different than looking at printed paper. And yet E Ink devices are connected for downloading and file sharing purposes, giving you the best of both worlds.

Most E Ink-enabled devices allow you to use a front light, which is essentially a reading light built into the sides of the screen frame. Even when using a front light, however, E Ink ePaper devices are heathier for your eyes than other types of digital screens. E Ink’s ComfortGaze front light is engineered to reduce the amount of blue light to help prevent eye health problems.

ComfortGaze is new, so not all devices have it today. If you’re using a device with an E Ink ePaper screen that doesn’t have ComfortGaze, your healthiest viewing option is to turn down the front light or turn it off completely.

In addition to supporting better eye health, E Ink ePaper screens are built into devices that are not designed for watching videos, social media, or browsing the web — all the things that add up to constant distraction. E Ink screens are for focused learning, reading, drawing and creative ideation.
